A Cause We Love: The Youth Mental Health Project

At Kindhumans, we believe making the world a kinder place starts with our kids. In fact, our children were the inspiration behind why we created Kindhumans. One way we support our youth is through partnerships, like the one we have formed with The Youth Mental Health Project.

Children are commonly diagnosed with anxiety, depression and behavioral disorders, impacting how they function at home, school, and within their communities. Good mental health isn’t necessarily the absence of mental disorders, but the proper management of them through support systems, like family, community, and other organizations (cdc.gov).

The Youth Mental Health Project is a grassroots nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate, empower and support families and communities to better understand and care for the mental health of our youth. They do this through events and speakerships, providing educational materials, film screenings and a parent support network. They envision a world made up of informed families and caring communities that realize and strengthen the mental health of our youth—a world where people are just as aware of their mental health as their physical health, where families are validated and able to readily access the care they need.

Randi Silverman founded The Youth Mental Health Project after creating an award-winning feature film called “No Letting Go”. As a national public speaker and presenter on the topic of children’s mental health, Randi sparks meaningful conversations that provide insights into the challenges faced by families with a loved one who struggles with mental illness. A believer in the power of storytelling, Randi used her real life experiences as a mother of a child with a mental health disorder to co-write and produce the multi-award winning film, “No Letting Go”. As the founder of The Youth Mental Health Project, Randi’s work creates opportunities for open community dialogue and increases awareness and education about children’s mental health.

The organization’s goal is to remove the shame, blame, misunderstanding and silence around mental health so that people understand that mental health is something we all have, just like physical health.

Their events and speakerships spark positive dialogue and bring the subject of youth mental health to life in a way that is compelling, inspiring, and informative.

They produce educational materials that are great tools for those who want to learn more, like the Fact Sheet series, their “Understanding Youth Mental Health” booklet, created in partnership with Silver Hill Hospital and the “Understanding Youth Mental Health: Questions Parents Frequently Ask” guidebook, created in partnership with Child Guidance Mid-Fairfield County.

They host film screenings of “No Letting Go”, and have an extensive parent support network, a parent-driven, family focused program that provides parents who are concerned about their children’s mental health with a dependable and caring network, valuable peer support, and access to peer recommended resources in their local communities.

To support The Youth Mental Health Project, Kindhumans has partnered with Cheryl Sorg, an artist based in Encinitas, CA who has battled with Bipolar II, to create a new line of Portals of Hope tees. The graphic is bright and inspirational—you can find her Portals of Hope imagery in cities around the world in the form of street art, meant to inspire humans who come across them.

We think you will also be inspired by the artist’s unique and playful image—originally created with colorful tape—of a gateway that transports us to a place we all dream about; one that has transcended the plague of racism, misogyny, hate, poverty and more.

We’re proud to give back 30% of the t-shirts proceeds to The Youth Mental Health Project. Show your support of children’s mental health by purchasing one the Portals of Hope tees today. Together, we can all make a difference. Shop now.
