Celebrate While You Advocate / Earth Day Wouldn’t Be the Same Without You!

Earth Day has always been about coming together as a community to show respect for the natural world and the planet we inhabit. By unifying our voices we are able to advocate for policies that protect, restore, and pay homage to Earth. On this April 22nd, we celebrate 50 years of individuals, cause organizations, and businesses unifying to take environmental action.

Until 1970, many Americans remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and the threat of pollution on human health. While most Americans were unaware of these issues, people across the country were looking for solutions to environmental destruction caused by oil spills, smog, power plants, pesticides, polluted waterways, and more. This day in 1970 marked the first time they all banded together.

The idea for Earth Day was sparked after U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson witnessed the mass destruction caused by an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson realized he could channel the energy of anti-war protests into emerging public consciousness about environmental concerns. He planned to push environmental protection onto the national political agenda and into the mainstream. Senator Nelson hired a Harvard student to support his efforts, rallied the troops, and Earth Day was born.

On April 22 in 1970, 20 million people (10% of the U.S. population at the time) took to the streets and college campuses across hundreds of cities to protest the way humans were treating the planet and demand a new life approach moving forward.

“Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from republicans and democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.”

Throughout the history of Earth Day, environmental organizations were born. These groups were responsible for bringing environmental issues to the forefront and into the mainstream, which led to many new laws being passed. Fifty years later, Earth Day continues to hold major international significance. Initially mobilizing 200 million people, recognized globally in 1990, and now including over 1 billion participants, Earth Day has grown into largest secular observance in the world. Building a Better Future Together

Out of a shared love for the outdoors and a mutual responsibility to protect our Earth, 1% for the Planet was created by Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia Founder) and Craig Mathews (Blue Ribbon Flies) in 2002. The idea was simple: companies profit from the resources they take from the earth and they should protect those resources by donating 1% of their sales to organizations focused on different environmental initiatives. 1% for the Planet connects their members with non-profit organizations that align with their values and add to their brand stories.

The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”
