Event

Kelp Out the Planet with SeaTrees

Thank you for joining us for the Kindhumans Live | Kelp out the planet with SeaTrees! In case you missed it you can check out the recording of the live event, where we embarked on a journey with host Kassia Meador and the team at SeaTrees, environmental artist Charlie Callahan and surfboard shaper Ashley Lloyd for a live virtual event to learn about carbon sequestration and what you can do as an individual to help protect our planet. Enjoy!

What You’ll Discover

We’ll discuss the magic of natural ecosystems including kelp forests, help demystify carbon sequestration, talk about what we can do as individuals to help, have a short Q&A with the panelists and end with a couch concert from Ashley Lloyd.

About SeaTrees

We need more people to protect ocean health. Threats like climate change and ocean acidification are accelerating faster than ever before in geologic history. Humanity must rise to meet that threat.

SeaTrees creates connections between people and brands that are ready to meet this challenge, and the social entrepreneurs and scientists who know how to regenerate ecosystems but struggle for funding and recognition.

Through a combination of ancient wisdom, modern science and business, we can speed up the Earth’s natural healing mechanisms to repair our planet in real-time. We will also create jobs and livelihoods that maintain healthy ecosystems for the future.

Meet our Live Guests

Kassia Meador

Kassia Meador is simply a rad and kind human being. California-born and bred, Kassia Meador began surfing at age 14. By 17-years-old, Kassia was a sponsored pro-longboarder, traveling the world. Known for her graceful surf style, Kassia was crowned the “queen of noseriding” by the New York Times and in 2011 ranked 2nd on the WSL women’s longboard tour. In 2013, Kassia left sponsored surfing to build a brand that focused on quality instead of quantity, working towards more conscious solutions rather than contributing to the larger global issues. In 2015 she launched KASSIA+SURF, a brand for women by women with design rooted in authenticity gained through 23 years experience.

Charlie Challahan

Charlie signs his art as S e e l I f e, as an affirmation of how everything in this life comes back to the sea, guiding our senses. He also go by B a t r a y z, because he likes the shape, energy and fluidity; very mantra-like. Charlie was raised in Columbus, Ohio where he received a B.F.A. at the Columbus College of Art & Design, spent time snowboarding and climbing in Colorado for 2 years, and eventually biked his way from there to San Francisco in 2000 to begin a surf-inspired art career.

Ashley Lloyd

Ashley’s love for the ocean started at a young age in Malibu. A life evolved around California peelers has helped to foster her knowledge of a vast array of surfboard shapes. In 2002, while studying music in Santa Barbara, Ashley also began the craft of making surfboards. Lloyd is ever grateful for her friend, Danny Tarampi, the first person to teach her about shaping and the Boys from the Wilderness, in Santa Barbara, who guided her through her first steps in foam, fiberglass and resin. In her beginning, Ashley shaped and glassed all the boards she made. In 2005, Lloyd joined Bing Surfboards as a team rider and shaper with two of her own surfboard models, while continuing with her own line of custom surfboards out of Santa Cruz, CA where she now resides as a proud mama, surfboard shaper, and founder of Unfurling, her newest endeavour.

Kevin Whilden

Kevin is a green business entrepreneur and a geologist. His passion is solving the problem of climate change, and his career has spanned this field: scientific research in Antarctica, carbon offset policy and development, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and Clean Tech startups developing technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Kevin’s underlying interest is in understanding how complex systems work and what is needed to create large-scale change on a societal level. Sustainable Surf and SeaTrees grew out of the recognition that the solution to climate change needs a fun and interesting “low-carbon lifestyle”, which surfing can become. Kevin is also interested in all lifestyle solutions to climate change, such as biodiesel fuel, permaculture, solar, and energy efficiency.

Michael Stewart

Michael Stewart grew up sliding on the shifting sand bars around Cape Hatteras, but now finds himself slotted among the rocks, sharks & fog near the Golden Gate bridge. He has been focused on sustainability issues (in particular, Climate Change issues) and certification of “greener” or sustainable products at several notable start-up companies. These include UL Environment, (a new business of the 116+ year old nonprofit Underwriters Labs), Cooler Inc., Carbonfund.org and the Social Venture Network, where he has worked with many of the biggest consumer product brands to look at the impacts of their products. This experience has allowed Michael to work with action sports lifestyle brands to evaluate the environmental impacts of products, services, and events. And where possible, to consult on how to reduce/compensate/offset those environmental impacts with “certified” environmental projects like tropical reforestation, renewable energy, etc.
