Upcycle Your Clothes and Your Lifestyle with Tyler Chanel

Meet Tyler, fellow kind human and creator of Thrifts and Tangles. She leads a sustainable, fashionable lifestyle by thrifting her clothes and she promotes and documents these choices through her blog. She’s encouraging our community to practice eco-friendly lifestyle choices, exude confidence, and spread kindness – we’re stoked to share her story! – KH

Tell us about yourself, Tyler!
I started my blog, Thrifts and Tangles, in 2012 as a way for me to share my natural hair journey. It has grown into a platform that encourages others to lead through self-confidence and sustainability.

When I’m not blogging or modeling, I enjoy visiting museums, reading African American literature, and taking naps. One fun fact about myself is I cannot snap with my left hand.

What is the motivation and inspiration behind Thrifts and Tangles and what do you
hope to achieve?
I love sharing my knowledge and passions with my community. I know thrifting, sustainability,
and embracing your natural self can seem overwhelming at first, so I hope my content helps
make those three things a little less intimidating.

What does sustainability mean to you and what role does it have in your life and your movement?
For me, sustainability means being mindful about how my actions and behaviors affect the wellbeing of Earth and its creatures.

The main way I live a sustainable lifestyle is by refusing to buy items from fast-fashion companies. Instead, I choose to shop secondhand or to shop with ethical brands.

I am also making an effort to be more sustainable in other aspects of my life as well. Some of the sustainable swaps I have made in my daily life include driving less, shopping less, and upcycling more.

How would you define kindness and what does being a kind human mean to you?
Kindness is being loving, patient, selfless, and accepting towards others.

“Being a kind human means that you listen, you don’t judge others, and you give back.”

Name three kind humans in your life that have positively affected you and why?
My parents, for always being accepting and encouraging me to chase my dreams. My aunt, for always sharing her wisdom and uplifting me with her words. My fiancé, for always being curious and for being a great listener.

What is a message, life lesson or kindness quote you want to spread and leave with the Kindhumans community?
Sometimes we forget that kindness starts from within, so please remember to always be kind to yourself.
